We Found Paradise in Thailand: A Slow Week on Koh Munnork

There are some places that instantly make you slow down. Places where time seems to stretch a little longer, where your phone becomes irrelevant, and where the days are measured by sunrise, fresh coconuts, and the sound of waves rolling onto the shore. For us, that place was Koh Munnork.

Our stay here was completely unplanned.

On our latest trip to Thailand, we had to make some last-minute changes to our itinerary due to the Thai–Cambodian border conflict. While searching for somewhere peaceful to spend a few days close to Bangkok, we came across Koh Munnork almost by accident. Looking back now, it feels like we found exactly what we needed.

From the moment we arrived by the resort’s private ferry from Laem Tan Pier and stepped onto the soft, white coral sand, the island had a calming effect on us. Life moved slowly here in the best possible way.

We received a welcome drink and some fresh fruit upon arrival before being escorted to our room. The room was simple and rustic — we stayed in the most affordable room category — but it was clean, comfortable, and perfectly suited to island life. We quickly realised that luxury on Koh Munnork is not about polished interiors or five-star facilities. It is about waking up to the sound of the ocean, stepping barefoot onto warm sand, and having nowhere else you need to be.

Most of our days followed the same rhythm.

We spent long mornings reading in the sun on a private little gazebo, cooling off in the crystal-clear water below whenever the heat became too much. The coral reef just offshore made snorkelling one of our favourite activities during the stay, and we often drifted around in the water for hours, watching colourful fish move between the rocks and coral.

Every morning, we woke up early enough to catch the sunrise. Watching the sky slowly turn shades of pink and orange over the sea became one of those simple travel moments that stays with you long after you leave.

Evenings were just as memorable.

Before dinner, we would walk over to the restaurant, order cocktails, a cold Chang, or fresh coconuts, and play card games while the sun disappeared below the horizon. There was something wonderfully nostalgic about it all — no distractions, no rush, just the feeling of being completely present.

The food deserves a special mention. We only ordered Thai dishes during our stay, and every single meal was fantastic. Everything tasted fresh, flavourful, and cooked with care. Some of our favourite moments on the island were simply sitting down for dinner after a long day in the sun, listening to the waves while sharing dish after dish.

One thing to know before visiting: Koh Munnork is intentionally disconnected from the modern world. The internet connection is limited, and the electricity is turned off for a few hours during the daytime. But honestly, that is part of the charm. After a day or two, we stopped checking our phones altogether and fully settled into island life.

The hotel manager also helped arrange private transport to and from Bangkok, which made getting there surprisingly smooth despite the island’s remote feel.

Koh Munnork is not the place to come for nightlife, luxury resorts, or packed itineraries. It is a place for slowing down. For reading books you never normally have time for. For afternoon swims, long dinners, and quiet mornings by the sea.

We arrived because our travel plans unexpectedly changed. We left wondering if this little island might actually be our favourite place in Thailand.
